Hobby Horse Blue Boy-Nursery Rhyme Gift-Handmade Metal Balance Model

Hobby Horse Blue Boy is a handmade metal nursery figure, a little lad in a blue tunic and pointed hat riding his dappled hobby horse, straight out of "Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross." Balanced on a hidden counterweight, horse and rider rock gently from side to side at the lightest touch. As they move, his arms, legs and head bob in time, and the horse's head nods along, with a soft ticking rhythm like an old nursery clock before settling back to rest.

Each piece is cut, shaped, assembled and hand-painted in a traditional blacksmith's workshop, in the spirit of the painted tinplate balancing toys of the Victorian and Edwardian nursery. Made in small batches, so no two are exactly the same, the little differences in the brushwork are the mark of proper handmade work.

A really special piece for a nursery shelf, child's bedroom, playroom or grandparent's mantelpiece. The kind of nursery ornament that gets kept, passed down and remembered, exactly the sort of thing that stayed on a shelf all through childhood and comes out again a generation later for the grandchildren.
